The Virtual Benefit

Bilde
The 8th Mass Medium is upon us. Virtual and Augmented Reality has never been more popular. Anything Oculus(Rift) has gone viral and has stayed that way. These are indeed great times to be a gamer, or a smart phone or tablet owner(which is pretty much everyone except me). While the bugs and kinks are getting worked out before finally opening the pandora's box that immersing ourselves entirely in virtual worlds will reveal, one must ask: How will another digital gadget contribute to society, and how is it different? Except for the obvious uses for virtual reality and augmented reality, mostly dominated by the entertainment industry and applications, how can it be used for "the greater good"? We've heard and seen all the cautionary tales and potential problems it can cause to society, mostly coming from science fiction, but where are the innovators who combine technologies to benefit the human race? They're here, but you just haven't heard about them yet. If

One Step Closer To Fully Fledged Augmented Reality

This is a very good demonstration of an augmented reality build, based on an Oculus Rift setup, with Logitech cameras attached, and a motion capture software. My impression from this is that we are going to be alot more capable of multi-tasking in the future. And of course this is also one of the best working proof of concepts I have seen for augmented reality. That he can spawn multiple screens in mid air is to me one of the coolest features because it in a way confirms what I have previously thought. That monitors in real life are no longer necessary, as we now can spawn an unknown number of them and do our daily tasks from within a virtual/augmented world. Just imagine the portable wearable version of this.

"Wish You Were Here"

Sharing experiences. Something we all have, and continue to do, whether it is our parents' photoalbums or our photos and videos we share via facebook, youtube and so on. We have written countless books and articles of our first hand accounts, describing every observation of details that stood out to us in our surroundings and sometimes even the smell, in order to immerse readers and viewers, because we truly wish we could share those experiences with them. Even in fiction, authors, movie writers, directors, artists, actors do their best to convince you of the reality of stories congured in great creative minds of the world. But we still wish we could go there. To that moment or that place. No matter how high resolution or great 3D effect on our square limited portals to those worlds are. Those examples are proof of that fact. Some say we are getting closer and closer as technology is getting more advanced and innovative. Video games, let players take interactive part of a story s

The Oculus Agenda

Why are all the guys so thrilled about experiencing Oculus Rift? Someone answered that question... (Not safe for work) Holy shit. This is brilliant. Not only does this short video realize all prebupescant boys' dreams, but it features some really contraversial scenes. I am of course referring to the scene where this kid has anal intercourse with none other than the digital version of 50 Cent, referring to his own video game, where somehow he's in the middle east killing bad guys. I was literally digging my head under my couch pillow laughing my ass off. At the point I saw the first ever "ragdoll blowjob", I think I blacked out for a second. There was not enough oxygen to fill my lungs to express the amount of laughter my brain's reaction needed. This video will go viral. There is no doubt about that at this stage. And it will also result in alot more attention to the Oculus Rift itself. Which is a good thing. Whether this is supported officially b

Welcome To The HoloDeck

Glitchy augmented reality apps aside, in the world of virtual reality, we are starting to see mighty impressive things. If you have been living under a rock lately, may I introduce you to the Oculus Rift. The intended use for Oculus Rift is for gaming related applications on PC. But we are seeing extraordinary things being made for it, the following example being one of the best uses I have found of all of them. Be warned, this might not be safe for work, depending on what your work consists of, but I can guess it's something creative, so a nude girl here and there will probably not be a "lose your job"-kind of problem. In this program you can watch 3D scans of people in high quality models from any angle you like. The 3D people in this video are obviously wearing very little clothes, but that is a better way of really seeing how detailed this models really are. There are not irregular inconsistancies to see at first glance that stops the illusion of having

The 8th Mass Medium

The 8th Mass Medium, what is it? I try to explain it through this video I made for my final animation film called "Vita Virtualis"(means "Virtual Life" in Latin) at Noroff. The intro of this short film might test your patience, because it is kind of lingering. But I found it important to present visually that what we want, in this case augmented reality in it's most spectacular form, won't come as fast as the next iphone. But It's getting there slowly and surely. And to get there we will have to look back, to our previous, perhaps even first steps of technologic successes in order to succeed ourselves. The ever rising music in the background is also a hint to that.(Das Rheingold Vorspiel by Wagner). The 3D modelled record player, telephone, television and camera are there to represent the origins of the parts that make up the digital experience today. Could of used a calculator/old computer as well, but I think it's already sufficient to get the
