The 8th Mass Medium

The 8th Mass Medium, what is it? I try to explain it through this video I made for my final animation film called "Vita Virtualis"(means "Virtual Life" in Latin) at Noroff.

The intro of this short film might test your patience, because it is kind of lingering. But I found it important to present visually that what we want, in this case augmented reality in it's most spectacular form, won't come as fast as the next iphone. But It's getting there slowly and surely. And to get there we will have to look back, to our previous, perhaps even first steps of technologic successes in order to succeed ourselves. The ever rising music in the background is also a hint to that.(Das Rheingold Vorspiel by Wagner). The 3D modelled record player, telephone, television and camera are there to represent the origins of the parts that make up the digital experience today. Could of used a calculator/old computer as well, but I think it's already sufficient to get the idea across.

The first voice that you hear in this video is of Tomi Ahonen, one of the first people to label our mass mediums with numbers. 1st-2nd-3rd and all the way to the 8th mass medium. Tomi Ahonen is mostly known for writing about mobiles and the cell phone industry(the 7th mass medium), but in the Tedx talk I grabbed his voice from he tells us about the 8th mass medium; augmented reality. I recommend you to see his entire talk about it, since I barely scraped the surface with his explanation in this video since I had to make room for other voices speaking on other aspects of the subject.

The second set of voices are from a couple of podcasts by Joe Rogan and Jason Silva, on the "Joe Rogan Podcast". Here they discuss the potential future we have in store and how it might be like. Joe Rogan disusses all kinds of subjects on his podcast and I recommend watching his youtube videos. He is also a stand up comedian and MMA commentator. And yes, he is the guy who hosted "The Fear Factor".

Jason Silva is a futurist, a film maker and a modern day philosopher. I found him through one of his epiphany videos on youtube, each contains as much awe inspiring goodies as a man can share in a single breath. (He speaks incredibly fast)

And if you get chills and goosbumps as the hairs in your neck stand up after watching the video above you have been awestruck, which is something I tried to achieve with my short film as well. And that sensation is addictive.

Then I added the voice of Dr. Michio Kaku, a well known physicist that in this video speaks about the future in 2030, a few years ago(Whom I have mentioned in previous posts). In this part of my film he explains how we will interact with the internet in the future, with augmented reality glasses, and how we will use it in our daily lives. In the talk(not in my film) he mentions that eventually it will be fashionable, and you will see celebrities wearing the newest AR glasses at events and models on the catwalk.(Which Google did about a year ago with their Google Glass). Even before it is even available to most consumers. Dr Kaku goes on to mention contact lenses with the same technology, but it's safe to say that is still a long time coming(even though certain technologicly superior forces are already using lenses with digital technology).
