In the virtual world, anything is possible. Let's explore that statement. It has been predicted that we will in just a few decades be able to upload our consciousness to computers(Ray Kurzweil, Futurist, Inventor). To give up our physical bodies in exchange for immortality. No more diseases or physical pain. Death will no longer be the end of the line, but instead just a problem to be solved. But what will our digital eternal life be like? Would it be an improvement to the real thing? Will we actually feel alive or be defined as living if in a machine? Yes, it seems for every question, another pops up. So I'm going to write down a list of questions I find most interesting and elaborate on them. Today the Oculus Rift Devkit 2 was announced by Oculus VR, and I will be ordering one soon. The new devkit is based off the Chrystal Cove prototype revealed at CES 2014 earlier this year. It features a higher resolution(960x1080 per eye on a Low Persistence OLED Display), a higher refreshrate(up to 75hz), and positional tracking which accurately tracks your real world head movements. I find myself wondering how far back in line I will be by waiting a few days to order it. Hopefully there will be enough to feed the masses that inevitably will be ordering. It has been about five years since I started pondering on the impact a virtual reality or augmented reality headset would have, and it's about two years ago since I started this blog. When I did I felt that the technology had caught up with the dream, and all these incredible things we've wanted since childhood were possible and would come within the next three to five years. Then Google arrived and told me that my predictions were true, though not yet fully realized with their augmented reality glasses.  After that Team Oculus had their kickstarter for the Oculus Rift, a virtual reality headset that let's users enter virtual worlds and immerse themselves in a way not previously possible. What would it be like to be thrust through space and time inside a wormhole? This is one of the most interesting concepts brought to us by scientists and projected on our screens by science fiction writers and effect specialists. To present something the human race has never seen must be a big task in itself, if not to convince the viewers that it's real. There have been plenty of movies and novels where this experience has been simulated. But there is one example which blows them all away in my own personal opinion. The movie "Contact"(1997) directed by Robert Zemeckis based on a novel written by Carl Sagan himself, featuring Jodie Foster in the leading role as the accidental astronaut Dr. Ellie Arroway, has a sequence which brings you through the entire voyage through space inside a sphere, constructed to travel through wormholes. The 8th Mass Medium is upon us. Virtual and Augmented Reality has never been more popular. Anything Oculus(Rift) has gone viral and has stayed that way. These are indeed great times to be a gamer, or a smart phone or tablet owner(which is pretty much everyone except me). While the bugs and kinks are getting worked out before finally opening the pandora's box that immersing ourselves entirely in virtual worlds will reveal, one must ask: How will another digital gadget contribute to society, and how is it different? Except for the obvious uses for virtual reality and augmented reality, mostly dominated by the entertainment industry and applications, how can it be used for "the greater good"? We've heard and seen all the cautionary tales and potential problems it can cause to society, mostly coming from science fiction, but where are the innovators who combine technologies to benefit the human race? This is a very good demonstration of an augmented reality build, based on an Oculus Rift setup, with Logitech cameras attached, and a motion capture software. My impression from this is that we are going to be alot more capable of multi-tasking in the future. And of course this is also one of the best working proof of concepts I have seen for augmented reality. That he can spawn multiple screens in mid air is to me one of the coolest features because it in a way confirms what I have previously thought. That monitors in real life are no longer necessary, as we now can spawn an unknown number of them and do our daily tasks from within a virtual/augmented world. Just imagine the portable wearable version of this.
